It’s National Pizza Week, and even though I celebrate that week 52 times a year, I thought it’d be the best time to spout some pizza facts so we can fill out minds while we stuff our mouths. The earliest mention of the word “pizza” is more than a thousand years old, dating back to a Latin text written in 997 CE. In the early 20th century, pizza was mainly eaten and sold by working-class Italian immigrants. After WWII, soldiers came back from Italy with a taste for pizza, and thus grew the demand. The U.S Military Lab invented a ready-to-eat pizza that can last for up to 3 years intended for soldiers abroad. There’s a pizza museum in Philadelphia called Pizza Brain that houses the world’s largest collection of pizza memorabilia. The best nights for pizza sales are Halloween, the night before Thanksgiving, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, and Super Bowl Sunday. The largest pizza ever made was 131 feet across and weighed over 2.5 tons. Pizza Bagels are fucking awesome. That’s not a fact, I just love them. Pizza Stats! In 2013 Americans ate 350 slices per second, and 40% of Americans ate pizza once a week. Chuck E. Cheese’s was started by the co-founder of Atari, Nolan Bushnell, as a way to make money off of video games. Apparently, their business model included selling gross pizza while a scary robot mouse screams non-sense songs at you. Food scientists studied the different cheeses and their baking properties to find which cheese works best for pizzas. Mozzarella won out, so now it has flavor and science behind it. Spinning the dough is the best way to evenly spread the dough and retain moisture. There’s also World Pizza Championships where teams compete in dough-spinning. There was a film in 2011 called Pizza-Man, about a pizza-themed superhero who gained his powers from eating a genetically modified tomato. There’s an association called the Associazione Verace Pizza Nepoletana or “True Neapolitan Pizza Association”. The author of The Three Musketeers, Alexandre Dumas, saw that the Neapolitan people ate nothing but watermelon in the summer and pizza in the winter in Naples. The first deep dish “pizza” was created in 1943 by what would become the Pizzeria Uno chain of restaurants.Bonus Fact: Deep Dish Pizza is not pizza, it is a pizza flavored pot pie without a top. He is a pizza expert who has been working for the American Institute of Baking since 1967. Lombardi’s, a grocery store in New York City, is credited as the first place to sell pizza in America in 1905. In 2013 NASA-funded scientists invented a 3D printer capable of cooking a pizza in 70 seconds. Somehow a Noble Prize was never awarded… Frozen pizzas started in 1962, but weren’t well-received until Rose Totino revamped the recipe and made them, well, edible. Pizza has actually helped prevent many crimes, including a delivery man who threw the hot pie at his would-be muggers and escaped, as well as a woman who called the police pretending to order a pizza in front of a burglar who was in her home.
